Here Now - The 2010 Programme

2010 Guests

Wires and Wood

Hot Bluegrass - from Auckland

Michael Young - Dave Warren - Bryan Christianson - Lott

Wires & Wood are a 4 piece bluegrass band based in Auckland, New Zealand.  The music they play is drawn from a wide variety of sources - from songwriters as diverse as Bill Monroe, JJ Cale, Robert Earl Keen and Tim O'Brien.  The music ranges from sad and lonesome to driving and dynamic.  Wires and Wood cover the spectrum, with superb lead singing by mandolinist Micheal Young, ably backed by Dave Warren on flat-top, Bryan Christianson on the Mastertone and, in this instance, with Lott holding it all together on bass

No Sax or Violins

Traditional Male Harmony Group

Dave Hart - Dave Lloyd - Geoff Anders

Three likely lads from Christchurch have talked their way into performing at Tui this year and expect to spread songs for your delight, edification and jollification.  Dave Hart, Dave Lloyd & Geoff Anders all have a substantial history in folk music circles and should be well known to the crowd.  Their collective history of performing probably encompasses around 110 thousand years, at a guess.  All singers and musicians in their own right, they got together in mid 2009 to perform in the ever popular a cappella style of three male voiced harmony.  The assembled throng will be treated to a goodly amount of unaccompanied songs and some with a bit of subtle instrumentation.  We expect that Dave Hart will probably find it hard to resist performing some of his known and not-so-known recitations.  Collectively entitled "No Sax or Violins", they're just that and will expect a goodly amount of audience participation.

Cairde

Unique Celtic & Contemporary Acoustic Music Group

Evey McAulliffe - Anna Heinz - Sarah Lewis - Kate Sherwood - Carol Rose

Cairde, which means "friends" in Irish Gaelic, is certainly living up to its name as it celebrates twenty years of music making and friendship!  With three original members, Evey McAulliffe, Sara Lewis and Anna Heinz who, twelve years ago, were joined by Carol Rose & Kate Sherwood, the group has enjoyed developing its musical style and repertoire.  Although all five women sing and play instruments including guitar, piano, bass, flute, cello and bodhran drum, it's their original arrangements that set Cairde's music apart and makes it so unique.  Originally known for their Celtic sound, their repertoire now emcompasses contemporary acoustic music, including songs from New Zealand songwriters as well as traditional Irish songs.

Bring along your best singing voice and join lots of other people as Anna teaches two songs to be performed in the last concert of the festival.  This is always very popular and we wind up with more choir than audience.

Recorder/Flute Workshops

With Marguerite Clubb

"Wind@Tui" will have two formal sessions during the festival.  Marguerite will provide resources and support to extend your performance levels, no matter what level you are at.  You will be encouraged to get together with other folkies you meet and practice around your camping areas.  Beginner wind players will have guidance to play just a few notes which will all come together into a big wind band performance in the "blind date" concert on the last day.  With experience tutoring flute ensembles, Marguerite is now a full time Primary school teacher and leads an 'all comers' school band.  She also coordinates three bands with her husband Barrie in "The Christchurch Community Music club", which has been meeting for over six years.  Marguerite plays flute, piano, baritone and tenor sax.  Show an interest in music at Tui and you are in!!  Marguerite will notice your aspiring talents and direct them to enhance the festival.  Please bring your wind instrument to Tui and blow the dust off or through it.
